News > BRAEHEAD ARENA NEW HOME OF THE BRAEHEAD CLAN IHC
27 Apr 2010
The Clan will be making their debut in the Elite League for season 2010/11. Due to Arena commitments the first home game will not be until the beginning of October but depending on the scheduling of league fixtures the first Clan away league game will probably be in September. Braehead is part of the Clyde Waterfront Regeneration Scheme and was opened by Capital Shopping Centre in 1999. It sits just inside the dividing line between Renfrewshire and the City of Glasgow and is just 10 minutes by car from the centre of Glasgow and just 8 minutes by car from Glasgow Airport. Over 2 million people live within a 45 minutes drive of the Braehead Arena. This is the start of an ambitious plan to build a successful professional Ice Hockey franchise in the West Of Scotland and it is the first time that a professional IHC will be managed and based solely out of the Braehead region. It will not be without difficulties but the key to success will be to build patiently both the on and off ice activities especially the ice hockey structure below the Clan so that we can achieve our target of being able to fill the 3750 capacity Arena on a regular basis within the next five years. The West of Scotland has a long tradition of Ice Hockey, the Paisley Pirates won the Autumn Cup, Scottish Cup and Canada Cup in the 1950’s, the Glasgow Dynamos successfully played out of the Crossmyloof Ice Rink in the 1960’s and 1970’s and of course the all conquering Ayr Scottish Eagles won the Grand Slam in 1997/8 winning the Superleague, Challenge Cup and Play Offs and in 1998 they twice defeated AK Bars Kazan in the European Hockey League.
